Hi,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Customer Service today!

I understand that you are concerned about the SMS message you received with a verification code for your Microsoft Account. I feel your frustration and the urgency to resolve this. I'd like to provide you the support and information resources to help you.

Please be informed that an automated text notification is sent to a Microsoft Account user if there are significant changes made to the account, any suspicious activity detected, or for required/requested account verification. However, we would also like you to be aware of text scams.

Three reasons why you will be getting unwanted text messages about a Microsoft Account:

1.   A different Microsoft Account owner mistyped the alternate phone number associated to his own account and he needs to change it to the right one. The detailed explanation about Microsoft Account verification can be checked here.
2.   That could be someone else trying to access your account from a different location or device. To check your Microsoft Account's recent activity, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/Account/Security/recentactivity.aspx. Also, I strongly suggest that you protect your Microsoft Account and follow the security measures on this website.
3.   For scam text/s, please do not follow any of the instructions because its clear deceitful purpose is to compromise whatever personal and true information you can provide.

If you have questions and need help for further investigation, please contact Microsoft Account Chat Support. You can also submit an online support request by clicking here and select "My problem isn't listed here." Login using a working Microsoft Account to see the form or if you don't have an alternate Microsoft Account, you can sign up here.

I hope the above options and information come out to be helpful while we at Microsoft Customer Service try our best to address issues even beyond our scope.

Thanks for taking the time to contact us. Take care!
